You Throw These Out Every Day, But She Gives Them New Life As Beautiful Art

When it comes to drinking tea, there’s nothing more satisfying than getting that nasty little tea bag out of your mug and into the garbage can. Even though they steep into something that we all love, the little packets are less than appealing when they become saturated messes.

But artist Ruby Silvious could not agree with that statement less. The Tacloban City-born creator has a passion for repurposing what most of us see as trash into evocative works of art, and one of her collections — fittingly called 363 Days of Tea is about to change how we feel about the things that we’re so eager to throw away.

This is probably what comes to mind when we say used tea bag…but Silvious’ creations are far from this mess.

Even in a sea of coffee drinkers, there’s no denying the cultural significance of tea across the globe.

For many, drinking tea is a comforting morning ritual that sets the tone for the rest of the day.

There are few moments that are more conducive to reflection than early mornings spent over piping-hot mugs filled with the most well-loved drink in the world.

And what better way to capture that sort of reflection than by turning all of those tea bags into art?

Each day, Silvious lets her thoughts spill over from the back of her mind onto these little blank bags.

The end result is a totally unique spin on something that’s tossed aside by millions of people every day.

On mere inches of space, the artist brings characters in her mind’s eye to life.

Some of the pieces have stories to tell.

While others are perfectly cheeky.

But whatever the case may be, they’re all completely beautiful.

It’s pretty amazing how relaxing with a warm cup of tea can cause the mind to wander. As of now, Silvious is about 307 days into her series, and you can keep up with the ever-growing list — and check out more of her incredible work — here.
