Does Deep Breathing Really Work During a Panic Attack?

Does deep breathing
work during a panic attack? It’s not uncommon for me to hear people talk
about using deep breathing to try and manage   panic attacks, and more often than not,
I hear that it simply just doesn’t work. Deep breathing can be helpful
when it comes to managing anxiety,   but if you’re expecting to stop a panic attack
once it starts, you’re probably asking too much from it, sort of like that old saying or
adage of bringing a knife to a gunfight. Once there is a large release of adrenaline, deep
breathing, at least when done well, can help you slow your heart rate and blood pressure, which
will help reduce the flow of more adrenaline. But at the moment, you still
have to pay the bill for all the adrenaline that’s already
been released into your system. And I keep mentioning the word adrenaline. The
reason for that is this is the hormone that’s responsible for all the uncomfortable feelings
that come from a panic attack, such as rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest and stomach,
sweating, choking, feeling surreal, and so on.

The good news here, though, is that even
though panic attacks are uncomfortable,   they aren’t harmful, and usually, you’re through
the worst of it is in about 10 to 20 minutes.
