There are so many strange parts of this world that you won’t see in your daily life (and there is a chance you will never see in person). It’s an odd thing to think about. For example, there’s a small archipelago of four islands located in the Indian Ocean that look so strange, it’s hard to believe they are real. It’s called Socotra and it’s located near Yemen. What makes Socotra different from other islands is the way it was created and isolated. Because of that, it has evolved to look like an alien land. The main island, named Socotra Island, is a perfect example of just how strange this place is.
The Socotra archipelago is very isolated.
A third of the plant life found on Socotra Island isn’t found anywhere else in the world.
This includes the famous dragon’s blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari).
Socotra is one of the most-isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin (i.e., it wasn’t formed by a volcano).
The main island has three geographical terrains: the narrow coastal plains, a limestone plateau permeated with karstic caves, and the Haghier Mountains.
Socotra’s climate is a mix between a tropical desert and a semi-desert climate.
For being such a small, isolated place, there are endless amazing things to see.
The biodiversity you can view here is astounding.
The current Socotra fauna is being threatened by climate change and new species that were introduced to the area.
Alien-looking trees, like the ones seen above, are actually in danger of disappearing. Cucumber, aloe, pomegranate, dragon’s blood and other trees are strange but delicate.
Socotra used to be filled with wetlands and streams.
Now, the island is covered in sand.
Socotra is one of those special places in the world that look like nothing else.
Unfortunately, traveling to Yemen is difficult, especially for Americas in the current global social climate.
It’s a shame, though.
This island is truly a gem.
