Structured Data Training 6: How to overwrite Global Structured Data properties
In this video I want to demonstrate howyou can overrule qualities from world-wide snippets.* music playing* Hey and welcome back. Nice tohave you in the third lesson of module 2. I am Florian private developers of SNIP theRich Snippets and Structured Data Plugin for WordPress. If you want to use theplugin please feel free to follow the link that you could find in thedescription area. Now let’s say I am working on a website that gives recipes.I know from the previous videos that Google( and perhaps other search engines more) prove a Rich Snippet in search results if I use structured the necessary data for recipes. Ifdone right the Rich Snippet registers a picture of a dish, a hotshot rating, serves, the total cooking time, the calories and so forth.Because I don’t want to createa single recipe snippet for each recipepage you have decided that you create a Global Snippet. If you don’t know yet what Global Snippets are please go backone video where I explained in every detail why this functionality saves youa ton of work. Let’s have a look at Global Snippet in the plugin again. Whenloggedin to your WordPress dashboard click the Global Snippets link from themenu. That will bring you to the overview of world snippets. We now click on therecipe. A recipe is a good illustration that explains how overwriting of globalsnippet belongings operates and why it constructs impression to use this functionality.SNIP my Rich Snippets and Structured Data WordPress plugin ships with the globalrecipe snippet already. So in most cases you are ready to go. However we’llhave a closer look to it now anyway so that you understand how everythingworks. When you move your mouse over belonging sequence you can see that there aretwo checkboxes. One that says overridable and one that says list. I willexplain that to you in every detail but for now I goes to show you how overwritingworks. Before we start you need to know your following: I have a custom post typenamed recipes. For now I have only one recipepublished. On the locates page of SNIP I selected recipes on the selectbox sothat I can use snippets there as well. Because I think everyone likes to eatdonuts I wrote about donuts in my first recipe pole. So let’s take a closer lookat this announce. As you can see, a usual recipe upright has certain information likethe persona, information about yield and the fix hour, a roster of parts, readying gradations and so on.We want tointegrate this information into our world-wide snippet now. As you have seen inone of the previous screenshots some of the properties of the world recipesnippets are stigmatized as overrideable previously. When you edit the fields youalso see that the field type for furnish is direct text input. But the fieldvalue is empty. This is because it’s overwritten on each upright separately soyou don’t need a price now. As you can see last-minute in some special cases youmaybe want to add a default value. If that is the case you can do that here. The prepTime and cookTime qualities are also tagged overridable. As you cansee the field type is a duration will default value of 30 minutes. The durationis a special field type because schema.org forces us to use a specialtime format for durations. To be exact the time format should be in the formathow ISO8 601 defines it. In this format a value of 30 minutes would look like this 😛 T30M. That’s weird because no one knows exactly how to use the time format. So I wrote a little wrapper function that allows you to really computed hours. Thewrapper function will then alter this into the special format that searchengines need. Let’s go back to our recipe berth. As you can see there is a newbutton in the sidebar that is labeled Edit Global Snippets. A click on it opensup a popup window. On the left side you can see allthe global snippets that are available. We click on the recipe. Now allthe fields that are distinguished overridable are listed. We can see the recipeYieldproperty that is a text field but the default value is nothing.Just like wedefined it earlier. When you scroll down you can see the prepTime, the cookTimeas well as the totalTime. They are all labelled overridable and the field type isa duration. That allows a user to enter the duration in instants. But there areeven more significances that can be overwritten like its consideration of the report, the description and soon. Just go back to the world snippet to check what owneds I have labelled overridable and you will recognize how easy it is to work with this fantastic tool.To sum it up shortly you should mark a owned overridableif it needs to bedifferent and every positions and if you expect an precise user input. If somedata is already there for example if you use a plugin that lets you gather recipedata immediately via a special form you should try to use this data instead. Hereis an example: If you put up the popular Advanced Custom Fields plugin to allowfor entering recipe data you can use this data instead.I have explained howthis works in the previous video about global snippets and how you can usepostmetadata for it. Now let’s go back to our world-wide recipes snippet again.Earlier in this video I told you that there is another checkbox that islabeled List. This checkbox should ever be selected if the property can havemultiple prices. In our recipe snippet that would be the case for the recipeIngredient property. That compiles impression because a recipe always has multipleingredients. Let’s go back to our recipe again. Click the Edit Global Snippetsbutton. Choose recipe from the left menu and “ve been waiting for” all qualities are loaded. Now you can see that after the recipe part there are still two typifies: a plussign that supplements a new input domain and a scum icon to allow deleting theproperty. Let’s click on the plussign a few times. You see that we now have multiple recipeIngredient properties. You can start toenter some textbook in the fields now. Note that all belongings that have beenmarked with the List checkbox are merged together to a single owned later. SoGoogles Structured Data Test Tool will exclusively assure one dimension. But this propertywill have multiple appraises. Don’t be frightened when I demo you thesource code now but you should be familiar with it already. I have shown itto you in the very first videos of this structured data qualifying. As you can seethere is only one recipeIngredient property now and it inherits all ingredient textsone by one. We as makes say that the property is now an array of pieces. So tosum this up the List checkbox should only be used when you want to create an array ofelements. In other names if you want to merge several properties of the samename together. That’s it! It’s time to part everything up. In this video you havelearned that it’s possible to override certain assets of global snippetsone by one if they are stigmatized overridable. You can use this featurewhenever you need an definite customer input. In other texts: whether it was necessary to a value thatis different within every post and cannot be gather automatically. You canalso choose from a variety of field categories that shapes it easier to addcertain data like the duration importance shown in this video. You have learnedthat you can mark certain properties as registers. That allows you to create an arrayof values. That is particularly useful for dimensions like the ingredientproperty shown in this video. Last but not least if global snippet ethics aremarked overridable you can fill them in a world snippets window that you canreach from your upright, sheets or practice upright types. Wow! You have now reached theend of module 2. Congratulations! You have learned everything from the ground up.What structured data is, what Rich Snippets are, why they are usefuland you now know how SNIP the Rich Snippets and Structured Data WordPressPlugin runs all together. In module 3 I will go through every schemathat is currently supported by Google and develops a Rich Snippet in searchresults. Feel free to pick one that you need.Hope wants to talk to you there.* music playing *.
