Sailing Across the Indian Ocean! – Sailing SV Delos Ep. 79

Music ONETOX RAMUKANJI Previously on Delos, we pick up the southeast trades and have some smooth sailing in the southern Indian Ocean 44. As you, ‘ll see a pretty massive squall, We’re seeing sustained knots of 40.

We’ve seen up to 45 and I had a gust up to 50, So we’ve got most of the sails in, except for the jib, And we’re running downwind a little bit to decrease the apparent wind, but it is the gnarly man.

It’s a big one, Just a tiny bit of sail up.

I don’t like this Whoa.

I don’t like this at all INAUDIBLE.

I need to fix that window.

It’s, scary, Put the INAUDIBLE It’s just gone 4.

O’clock in the morning And things have calmed down a little bit now, but it’s been another rough sleepless night.

I think for everybody We’re, seeing about 20 knots of wind now and we’re about 10 miles away from our course that we want to be our way onto There.’s this gnarly current here that’s just pushing us around and we’ve been 10 miles away for my whole watch.

We’re just pretty much getting pushed parallel with it. I’m trying to point as high as I try and hit 170, and the course over ground is 200 210.

So the current and the waves are just pretty gnarly And a cargo ship’s just passing behind us.

Now it’s the first boat.

We’ve seen in a week So that’s a good sign.

I guess Well the suns.

Finally, coming up All the gnarly squalls from last night have passed by and we have a steady breeze again, But the seas are fucking confused and shitty, But we’re on our final approach into Cocos Keeling.

So hopefully, within two days we’ll be there.

But we’ll have to be careful because there’s a pretty strong current setting us westbound.

So if we don’t make anymore easting, we’ll get set off course, and then we’ll get blown right, passed, Cocos which would fucking suck because then the next stop would be fuck.

We’d have to go to Seychelles or something – And I think we’re all ready for an anchorage about now. So we don’t want to have to do that, But it’s a beautiful morning And I have a feeling: it’s, going to be a good day of sailing MUSIC PLAYING.

How are you feeling Frida Yeah? I feel good.

I managed to sleep some, But it was very INAUDIBLE last night, and boom boom boom, And when you and Brady were up.

I was like I found myself laying in the INAUDIBLE, Babs and Max were resting in the salon on the couch.

Josje was at the bow And Brian just passed me through, and I took my notebook and I was like I’m going to write about this, And then I was describing what I heard and what everyone was doing, and I was like yeah this isn’t too bad.

You know I’m writing about this.

It’s like a cool experience And then, when Brian popped by, I was like it’s, pretty gnarly out there, isn’t it And he was like yeah.

It’s, probably the worst squall I’ve ever seen, And I was like SWALLOWING Like OK a few months ago.

I would have been.

I have been dreading that moment when I find myself in this storm that you can’t get out of it and you just have to accept that it’s there and then, But it wasn’t too bad It wasn’t too bad. I tried to just kind of go with it because I think once you struggle like when you oh, no feel frustrated it’s hard.

So I try to be calm and just watch.

Some series are trying to rest and yeah.

It’s.

Only a few days now so I’m feeling excited about MUSIC PLAYING Last time was a shit night.

I think everybody was up all night That’s, probably the worst squall – that I’ve seen at night 46 knots Yeah It’s just been three days of.

I mean it’s pretty OK now, but It’s comfortable.

Now It’s.

Just that big waves, INAUDIBLE slam, the boat coming up out of the water and CRASHING SOUND, It kind of sounds like a bomb’s going off in INAUDIBLE.

I think everyone -‘s just really exhausted and tired. You know you sleep for 10 hours, but you don’t get sleep.

You just get knocked around like a rag doll and I just woke up at one point and just sat up in front of the fan.

You were so angry.

Last silent.

I was so frustrated.

Oh yeah Babs was sleeping on one of the sides of the salon and I got up because I was like I can’t fucking stand it up here, INAUDIBLE anymore, And I was like I’m, going to go slip INAUDIBLE.

I had my pillow with me and I was walking out and Babs was sitting up in her bed.

She’s said I was going to lay there Josje.

I was like I don’t know what came over me just really frustrated like That’ll.

Do it Yeah just the constant moving back and forth and the crashing and you’re half asleep, and you’re finally in dream mode and then boom, And then you just get woken up and It’s been quite a passage. I think this is our 15th night.

We should be at Cocos Keeling tomorrow, And it continues to be just wicked out here.

There are 25 to 30 knots.

Big massive five meters, swells and Delos is just rocketing down them.

I just saw 9 knots 10 knots, But it’s surprisingly comfortable.

She handles the waves well and we’re trimmed nicely and just cruising along, But looking forward to being steady for a while It’s been nothing but constant motion, So it’ll be good to find anchorage.

So it is two o’clock in the morning feeling really tired.

It’s been about constant 25 to 30, for my whole watch and massive swell Just a little bit of moonlight, so you can’t see these huge walls of waves coming towards you, a little bit lit up, which is nice, But I don’t Know I’m just happy.

We’re going to be in Cocos tomorrow because I am getting tired.

My body’s, tired. I wasn’t able to eat any dinner last night because I felt sick.

So I don’t know It.’s been a cool experience though, But it’s going to be nice to get a little bit of rest.

I guess Morning It’s.

4 AM.

I haven’t slept much When it’s stormy and stuff.

You have nowhere to go.

You kind of just have to stay and deal with the situation, But it’s been.

Ok.

It’s been OK, So I’m going to listen to a podcast, and hopefully, the true wind will stay between 25 and 30 knots.

I haven’t seen the sky in a few days. It feels really good.

I think the weather is clearing up a bit.

I like to think that we’re getting close to Cocos and hopefully, the weather won. ‘t be so rough.

Now, where we are at sea, the waves are just crazy, So it’s been blowing 30 knots all morning And it’s been another pretty sleepless night.

I think for everyone.

The seas are confused.

Like they don’t know what they’re up to.

They’re kind of coming from all directions, all the swells And they’re just building up There’s kind of waves and it’s uncomfortable.

We’re getting pushed around a lot, But we are like 50 miles away from Cocos Keeling, So it’s really exciting.

We should be in by this afternoon. I can’t believe that we’re going to be arriving today.

It feels like this passage has been going on for so long, But then the past week just flew by and we’re going to be there today That’s kind of weird.

I have no idea what to expect It.’s.

Just this little atoll and 100 Australians living there and 500 Malaysians.

So it should be an interesting mix Good morning Morning How are we doing out here Good Yeah.

It’s been 30 knots, all money, But it’s been good because it’s been INAUDIBLE, so INAUDIBLE It’s.

Just these seas are real fucking, annoying real confused and The forecast didn’t show me.

They show 20 knots all around here.

20 knots everywhere The fuck are these 30s?

Coming from. I think that forecast is.

We should always double it or add: 10 Yeah.

Were you able to sleep at all A little bit, yeah You just get so tired that you go to sleep for 10 minutes, and then something boom?

Then you wake up Gnarly, isn’t it Massive swells Yeah.

How do you feel about coming into Cocos Expectations? I don’t know I don’t know what to expect.

I feel like there’s going to be a bunch of Malaysians with Australian accents.

I’m just excited to stay at an anchorage for a good amount of time.

Instead of moving every couple of days, It’ll be sweet.

If the anchorage is nice just to hang out, But if there’s going to be some other cruisers there, we’ll have some cruiser parties and get drunk for a week.

No expectations though I’m a bit over these crazy waves. It’s getting a bit frustrating.

All I kind of want is to have a dream or something that’s still for a night’s sleep.

You know Me and Max were sleeping on either side of the salon this morning and there was a massive wave that just went crashed And the whole boat was on a lean like this, and we were just going flying forward And we both clung onto the table and Then we looked at each other and then we went back to sleep.

You look tired, bro Yeah, I’m fucking tired.

I haven’t slept well for a few days either.

I think it’s been the last three days and the nasty fucking nights It gets to you after a while, But we’re arriving today.

So I’m going to kiss the ground MUSIC PLAYING.

Listen.

How is it up there bro? Oh, it’s a pretty sweet man.

There were a couple of big ones like the bow gets launched, You look down and you’re five or six meters above the water and then boom your legs go all the way under It,’s pretty sweet. I think I might go after my watch.

It’s a lot.

It looks a lot less scary.

From up there Yeah, You can just see everything It’s.

Sweet though The camera never does the ocean justice, to show you the intensity of the waves that’s, not water in the bilge but our precious precious beer supply, We’re being slammed and shaken so hard.

The cans split and filled the bilge, See it Land ho.

Nobody else can see it, except I know it’s there.

I can’t see it.

They look like little mushrooms, Imagine the old sailors sailing for days and then seeing that That’s kind of what we did INAUDIBLE over there.

I can see it too. How far are we out Brian 4 42 nautical miles? Wow, it’s, land? Yes, Look There, it is.

I can see it.

Look at the land We are coming for you.

It’s, not a big land, but it’s a piece of land.

I can still jump on it.

I’m going to rattle a couple of beers back and forth Good How you going Good day there mate How you going This is our INAUDIBLE.

We’re almost there INAUDIBLE, Coco’s customs, Coco’s customs.

Do you smell that That is land Pretty tricky coming in Yeah? It’s, fucking sketchy coming in, I thought for sure we were going to tap.

What is the depth INAUDIBLE Two two and a half Under us Yeah? Oh, it’s real, clear water.

I’m not used to it Yeah. It was one hell of a sail by far one of our most trying passages.

We saw everything from dead, calm to gale-force winds.

We used every sail on the boat, We sailed 1 800 miles over 16 days and ended up on this amazing little atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

We’d earned it.

It was time to crack open a few cold ones, MUSIC PLAYING Up next, for the first time in 16 days, the crew steps onto land.

We find ourselves anchored in a perfect tropical paradise and soak up some sun and fun MUSIC PLAYING SINGING INAUDIBLE rolling by on the deep blue.
